Like many, throughout 2020 Chinese-born, US-based filmmaker Zhengfan Yang (Where Are You Going, IFFR 2016) looked closer at his immediate surroundings. From his apartment complex in Chicago, the filmmaker records ostensibly quotidian scenes: people walking, window cleaners, street sweepers; life viewed from inside a bubble. 　　This seemingly safe bubble is soon overlayed by audio excerpts from local police radio. At a time when US law enforcement came under particular attack, the audio track reveals a more complex reality, without taking sides. Through the police response team radio communications, brief insights into various unconnected urban realities follow each other in quick succession: from absurd or seemingly trivial scenes, to violent eruptions. The contrasting visual and audio layers provide an exceptional personal reflection, during a simmering historical moment, in an exceptional year spent in isolation.

A Short History of the Gaze is an experiential essay for Virtual Reality about the relationship between gaze and violence. 　　From the evolution of sight in a pre-cambrian sea creature to the dominance display of a primate, from a landscape of billboards begging for attention to an infinite panopticon, the player traverses and affects the virtual scenes by simply looking (or not looking) at things.

Jared is closeted. Sam is straight. They find a connection in each other that they've never had before, but where do they go from there? Over the course of three nights, six gay men sat down for interviews about their experiences, sexual and otherwise, with straight men. Those documentary interviews provide the narration for 'Curious Thing' as we watch Jared and Sam form a friendship that tests the boundaries of what they know about love. But as Jared's walls slowly come down and his passion for Sam grows, things take an unexpected turn.
